IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Top Gun Ceratanium

As the festivities move on at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022, today we took a peek at IWC Schaffhausen. This year the Top Gun series is getting various updates and expansions. It all began back in 2007 and since then we’ve seen all sorts of iterations with that obscure stealth look. This latest release is a new double chronograph edition crafted out of IWC’s proprietary alloy. The 41mm case is made of ceratanium, which is a proprietary alloy by IWC that combines titanium with a matte black ceramic treatment. This combination manages to efficiently merge the lightweight and resistant properties of titanium with the scratch resistance and durability of the latest zirconium oxide ceramics. On the flip-side is an exhibition case back, which allows us to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. IWC added a unique feature to this watch by giving it a partially tinted sapphire glass, making everything look a bit darker and further enhanced this models noir color scheme. It comes equipped with two inverted push-pieces to operate the chronograph and stop-watch features; with a setting-crown in-between them. Plus a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The glass has been secured against displacement by drop in air pressure. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet). Time is exhibited on a matte black dial with Arabic numerals, a ring of index markers and the iconic IWC triangle between two dots at the 12 o’clock position. All these indicators have been colored in a grey-ish hue that gives it the so-called “phantom” aesthetics, which we’ve see on some IWC”s before. There are three snailed sub-dials: a small hacking seconds at the 6 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter at the 9 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock position. The central and sub-seconds hands are all dagger-shaped, while the split-seconds is very thin and straight. The rhodium-plated central hands, hour index markers, and sub-dial hands have all undergone a Superluminova coating, for an enhanced legibility. It also includes a two-window day-date aperture, aligned with the 3 o’clock position.
