IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40

During this year's Watches and Wonders exhibition IWC Schaffhausen launched the new “Ingenieur Automatic 40”. This release is imbued with several historical facts as Chris Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC, explains: “With the new Ingenieur Automatic 40, the steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet returns to our portfolio. While taking inspiration from Gérald Genta’s Ingenieur SL from the 1970s, we invested a lot of time and effort into engineering a new automatic model with perfect case proportions and ergonomics, a high level of detail and finishing, and equipped with modern movement technology.” The 40mm case is available in either stainless-steel or grade 5 titanium with a mixture of satin-finished surfaces and polished accents. It is constructed with a soft-iron inner case for magnetic field protection, but still maintains a relatively slim profile with 10.7mm in thickness. Mounted to the case is a fixed bezel with brushed surface and polished bevels. This bezel design with five exposed polygonal screws, intuitively brings to mind the aesthetics of Gérald Genta. It comes equipped with a screw-in crown between lateral crown guards. All topped by a convex sapphire glass with an antireflective coating on both sides. The glass has been secured against displacement by drop in air pressure. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).Time is exhibited on either a black, green, or silver dial with steel applied hour indices, while circling around the flange is a snailed minute chapter ring. The titanium version also differs by having blackened hour index markers and a darker gray dial. This dial is characterized by a distinctive “grid” pattern composed of small lines that are offset by 90 degrees to each other. The pattern structure is actually stamped into the soft iron blank, before being galvanized. The rhodium-plated hands and applied indice have all been filled with a Super-LumiNova, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a frame date window at the 3 o’clock position.
