Chopard Alpine Eagle XL Chrono iN 18k Rose Gold and Titanium
Back in 2019 was when Chopard first presented their luxury sports “Alpine Eagle” watch collection, exclusively with time-and-date and time-only models. Shortly after they were followed-up by a few flyback chronographs. The two main novelties on this new addition to the “Chopard Alpine Eagle'' collection is a bi-material case crafted in ethical gold and ceramized titanium, plus it's the first time this model gets released on a leather strap, instead of an integrated bracelet. The tonneau-shapped 44mm case is made of 18k ethical rose gold with ceramized titanium crown guards and a 13.15mm height that was required to properly house its elaborate caliber mechanism.
The dark grey color of the titanium is obtained by a process of oxidation using electro-plasma technology. This alloy not only ensures a hardness of 1000 Vickers, but it is also as resistant to scratches as ceramic and will not fade over time.On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back, which allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features some visible purple jewels, a 22k gold oscillating rotor and the whole screwed-on circumference part is made of that ceramized titanium.Mounted to the case is a matching 18k ethical rose gold also with a vertical brushed finish, while the bevels offer a contrasting polished finish. The eight exposed gold polished screws have been placed in pairs on opposing sides. It comes equipped with flanked rectangular pushers to operate the chronograph functions with a gold polished screw-down crown. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).Time is exhibited on an absolute black colored dialed obtained through a galvanic treatment, which Chopard has stated to be inspired by an eagle’s iris. It features gold-plated hour index markers and the Roman numeral for only the 12 o’clock position, followed by a ring of white printed minute markings with a cube shape for every 5-minute increment. The darker black flange section includes a tachymeter scale. There are three sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a sub-seconds at 6 o’clock, and a 12-hour counter aligned at 9 o’clock. A dash of red appears on the tip of the chronograph seconds hand that features a feather counterweight. The central dynamic faceted hands, Roman numerals, and hour index markers have all been fitted with a Grade X1 Super-LumiNova coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture placed between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions. Inspiration for this dial's overall aesthetics can be directly attributed to the eagle’s iris, which explains the collection's branding.
