Breitling AVI B04 Chronograph GMT 46
A whole new series of timepieces by Breitling are on the rise and ready to take off, as a tribute to the world of aviation. The “Super AVI collection” is made up of five chronographs inspired by four legendary aircrafts used by the WWII Allied forces: the Curtis P-40 Warhawk, Vought F4U Corsair, P-51 Mustang, and the de Havilland Mosquito. The 46mm case for all these watches is made of stainless-steel with an overall thickness of 15.9mm, except the “P-51 Mustang” model which is represented twice in either steel or an 18k red gold option. Finishing touches reveal polished surfaces that contrast with a brushed finish along the flat case sides. Despite this sizing the watch wears smaller due to chamfered lugs that curve into the wrist.Mounted to the case is a coin edge ratcheted bidirectional bezel engraved with a 12-hour scale in steel, red-gold, or with a gloss black ceramic bezel insert for the “Super AVI Mosquito” model. On the flip-side the whole collection has been fitted with a sapphire exhibition caseback, which allows a view into the workings of the mechanical movement. Each model features the silhouette of the aircraft that inspired it emblazoned directly on to the sapphire crystal. It comes equipped with two piston-style pushers that operate the chronograph functions, with a screw-locked setting-crown in-between them, which is reinforced by two gaskets. All topped by a cambered sapphire crystal that’s been glare-proofed on both sides. Water-resistance on these watches can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).Dial wise is where all these watches differ the most from each other, due to the specific homage they provide to their inspirational aircraft. Two out of five have an overall black dial, while another comes in green, blue, and the red gold model has an anthracite dial. Take a peek at the various pictures to check for more differentiating details. In common all these watches tell time with Arabic numerals (except the 3, 6, and 9 spot represented by a triangle shape), followed by a ring of thin minute markers with a cube marking for each 5-minute increment. A second time-zone can be tracked by using the 24-hour ring on the inner bezel, which is pointed out by the red-tipped GMT hand (another common element across the entire collection). It also features a chronograph function with three snailed finished sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock; a 12-hour counter aligned with the 6 o’clock spot that also includes a date window; and a sub-seconds at 9 o’clock. The central hour/minute sword-style hands, Arabic numerals and index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. The steel “Mosquito” model is the only one with red-outlined hands.
