Breguet Reine de Naples 9835 and 9838

No matter what happens royalty keeps bouncing back in more forms. In this instance Breguet has added two new models to their “Reine de Naples” collection. We had recently reviewed a pair, but despite a similar casing these watches differ immensely in terms of layout and complications. The 36.5 mm by 28.45 mm oval shaped case is made of 18k white gold with an overall polished finish. Elegance is the keyword to describe this watch with its delicately crafted fluted casebands. On the flipside is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a platinum oscillating weight decorated with an engine-turned Clou de Paris hobnailing finish.Mounted to the case is a diamond or blue sapphire set bezel theme that reinforces a royal status to these particular watches. It comes equipped with a large protruding setting-crown, knurled near the top for a better grip, and also set with either a diamond or sapphire. If we take into account the bezel, flange, and crown, these models differ because the diamond version has a total of 161 diamonds, while the sapphire option has a total of 118 blue sapphires. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).Time is exhibited on either a white lacquered dial or a blue mother-of-pearl  dial, both with Arabic numerals. But these numerals are the hour markers as we’d usually expect to see, instead they represent the minutes.Plus the mother-of-pearl option hasn’t included as many numerals. Meanwhile circling within the dial flange is a ring of gem-set diamonds or sapphires, depending on the selected model. The hours appear in a cut-out window towards the center of the dial which tracks time as the heart shaped hand circles around. This ingenious mechanism created by Breguet allows the hand to change shape. It is composed of two arms that stretch out into an oblong form at 12 o’clock and into a more round, near "heart-shaped" appearance at 6 o’clock. If you take a peek at the video above you’ll see that as the minutes go by, each arm operates at a different speed. Thanks to this patented mechanism the proportions of the hand are constantly adjusting to their path around the oval shaped case. There is also a pear-cut diamond or white gold fixture (specific to each model) placed at the 6 o’clock position.

The “Breguet Reine de Naples” (References below) is powered by the in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 78A0 with 33 jewels, 252 components, and 25,200 vph. Power reserve can last up to 40 hours, when fully wound.Mounted on the watches is a blue alligator leather strap, secured to the wrist by an 18k white gold triple-folding buckle, which is set with 28 diamonds or blue sapphires. For more up to date information visit the official Breguet website here.
