Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557

One of the most celebrated complications by Breguet has now translated some of that complexity exteriorly. The technical achievements of the “Hora Mundi” were self-evident since it was first launched, but this new dial design has significantly elevated its aesthetic value. The new “Breguet Marine Hora Mundu 5557” can still switch between two time-zones at the push of a button, but this layered dial has brought on a whole other dimension. The 43.9mm fluted case is available in 18k white or rose gold with a brushed vertical surface and polished accents finish. This case is a modern interpretation of the classical theme of nautical watches, in which Breguet has historic expertise. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It showcases various jewels, golden gears, and oscillating weight decorated with Geneva stripes, guilloché, and circular finish. It comes equipped with a screw-down crown, plus an additional crown and pusher at 8 o’clock that allows it to select a city and trigger instant time zone jumps. The watches mechanism can calculate the time and date by using a patented system of cams, hammers and an integrated differential. So by simply pressing the pusher you can switch from one city to the other without affecting the accurate running of the watch. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance reaching up to 100 meters (328 feet).Time is exhibited on a layered dial with superimposed plates. The first gold base features blue hand-guilloché waves that appear to be in motion. Breguet wanted this blue sunburst dial base to “create the impression of a permanent waltz of the wave motifs”.On an additional plate made of sapphire we can see metallised meridians and the continents, which have been treated with a horizontal satin brushing, while their coastlines are outlined with a metallic turquoise border. As for telling time we can rely on the applied Roman numerals, followed by an outer flange with large hour index markers and small dots for the minutes. A small cut-out reveals the date at 12 o’clock, while a larger cut-out serves as a window view into the city disc at 6 o’clock.Meanwhile off the coast of Africa is a half-circle that provides a day/night indicator at 4 o’clock with the Sun and Moon in hammered gold. The central gold Breguet hands, applied Roman numerals and nautical pennants have all been treated with luminescent material, for an enhanced legibility.
