Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin Grained Blue Dial
Last year Audemars Piguet celebrated the 50th anniversary of their iconic Royal Oak, originally conceived by Gérald Genta and manufactured by AP since 1972. The half a century milestone moment served to introduce four new models with differing dial colors and chosen alloys. It also marked the outgoing of reference 15202, in exchange for 16202 that also ushered in a new caliber movement. This latest “Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin” is a boutique exclusive with a very special vintage inspired dial crafted by a hand-hammered technique. The 39 mm case is made of 18k white gold with a mix of vertical brushed flat surfaces and polished bevels. Mounted by the iconic “Royal Oak” octagonal shaped bezel with exposed 18k white gold hexagonal screws. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back, which allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The balance wheel and openworked rotor are made of rose gold with the later carved out in the form of an “AP” logo.It also comes equipped with a screw-down crown adorned with the AP logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a blue dial with white gold applied hour markers, followed by a white printed minute track ring. The prominent blue has a grainy textured look that almost resembles a star-lit sky, when seen from a distance. This type of finishing touch is also known as the “Tuscan” dial, which has been used by Audemars Piguet in the past. Meanwhile the AP logo at 6 o’clock we see here was reintroduced back in 2012 during its 40th anniversary edition. The central gold hands and hour index markers have all been given a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a tone-on-tone date aperture in the 3 o’clock position, but despite its midnight blue hue it still stands out a bit against the overall grainy dial aesthetics.
