Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Starwheel

Nearly two decades have already gone by since Audemars Piguet had done anything with their “Starwheel” concept, until now. This release becomes even more interesting because it's part of the “Code 11.59” collection. Innovation led to a reinterpretation of the “wandering hours”, made possible by tweaking caliber 4310. The end results are very futuristic aesthetics that will be part of a permanent collection. The multi-piece 41mm case is made with a combination of black ceramic for the middle case and crown, while then stretching out into 18k white gold lugs and caseback. This is a very distinctive design that commands attention as soon as it enters our camp of site.  On the flipside is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a rose gold openworked rotor decorated with the AP logo. Plus the very unique font with “Code 11.59” is engraved on the white gold rim portion.AP had to develop a new version of their caliber 4310 movement that features a module on top to display the wandering hours. This module is moving 3 discs around via a central axis that circulates star-shaped wheels underneath. It takes the module three hours to complete a revolution. Most of the white gold parts have a brushed finish with some polished bevels, but then the contrast of black ceramic accentuates all the other design choices. All topped by a dual-covered sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).Dial wise we get a mostly blue aventurine background, while hovering over it in the center are three black PVD-coated aluminum wandering hour discs. Each domed disc correlates to exhibit the current time. The upper half of the disk is framed by a glossy black inner flange that includes the classic 120-degree sector. The seconds track is linked to the central seconds hand, which was a playful decision that allows the user to enjoy the interplay of these moving parts. This video link leads to an explanation on how to set the watch properly. Telling time requires following these rotating discs, while not being distracted by the enchanted “night sky” vibes of the aventurine. The internal surface is also shaped like a dome and can create interesting lighting glares against the arched profile.
