The Patek Philippe 6159G is a new retrograde perpetual calendar housed in the brand’s modern Calatrava-style case. it introduces the familiar but often controversial display into a far more contemporary setting. A smoked sapphire dial, hobnail-patterned bezel, and streamlined profile make this the most refined execution of the layout yet. While the complication remains the same, the overall aesthetic feels notably less traditional, bringing Patek’s perpetual calendar offering into line with its more modern design language.
This latest Patek Philippe 6159G is housed in a white gold case that borrows its silhouette from the 6119 series, introduced in 2021. It measures 39.5mm in diameter and 11.49mm thick, placing it at the upper end of the Calatrava spectrum in terms of size. The case construction feels refreshingly contemporary, especially compared to previous executions of this complication. Polished throughout, the slender profile is enhanced by a hobnail bezel, an elegant guilloché Clous de Paris pattern that adds a tactile richness, visually separating it from more traditional dress pieces.
On the flipside the caseback is fitted with a sapphire crystal, offering a full view of the self-winding calibre 26-330 S QR. The solid 21k gold rotor and fine finishing are clearly visible, highlighting the movement’s technical and aesthetic refinement. From anglage to Geneva striping, all components meet the high standards set by the Patek Philippe Seal.
It comes equipped with a knurled white gold crown and slim downward-curving lugs for an ergonomic wrist presence. While this is technically a Grand Complication, its lines remain clean and discreet, paired with a dark gray composite fabric strap that lends a surprisingly relaxed touch. Water-resistance is rated to 30 meters (100 feet).
The dial is made from smoked sapphire crystal, metallized with a gradient finish that darkens toward the edges. This semi-transparent surface allows glimpses of the underlying perpetual calendar mechanism, particularly the rotating discs beneath the apertures. Applied white gold hour markers and dauphine-style hands contrast cleanly against the smoky backdrop, both coated with a subtle layer of luminescent material to enhance low-light legibility.
At 6 o’clock, a retrograde date arc dominates the lower half of the dial, its scale neatly framing the leap year aperture just above. A small seconds subdial is tucked in just beneath the arc. The upper portion of the dial features dual windows for the day of the week and month, spaced evenly at 9 and 3 o’clock. All calendar indications are instantaneous in their changeover, with the retrograde hand snapping back to the 1st at the end of each month.
While the display remains dense and information-rich, the symmetry of the layout and the smoky transparency lend a surprisingly contemporary feel. The printed railway minutes track along the periphery, rendered in white, helps anchor the dial and add balance to an otherwise complex design. Despite the variety of fonts and textures, the overall legibility is solid, with the smoked treatment muting the visual busyness without compromising clarity.

It comes equipped with a Gyromax® balance and a Spiromax® silicon hairspring, delivering both stability and resistance to magnetic fields. Power reserve can last up to 45 hours when fully wound.
Mounted on the watch is a hand-stitched grey calfskin strap with a textile-like surface finish and tonal stitching, lending the watch a contemporary edge in contrast to its complex inner mechanics. 
The strap is secured by an 18k white gold prong buckle, matching the case. Slim and supple, the strap helps ensure that despite the 11.49mm case height, the watch sits close to the wrist and remains comfortable throughout the day.
